School and Mental Health Aren't Friends...
This week we got to chose our own topics to write about. I decided to write about how school affects the mental health of the students. This is was a pretty interesting topic to read about since I am a high school student that doesn't have the best mental health. As I was doing research I found a survey from 2015 from the American College Health Association that 30 percent of college students feel stressed out because of school, 22 percent of them have anxiety related to school topics, and 20 percent recorded that they have sleep difficulties. (Suicide Prevention Resource Center) What I found interesting was that only 14 percent of students suffer from depression. While most kids say they have depression as a joke or when they feel sad for a few hours. So I figured that number would be higher than it is. The article also talked about how depression is usually linked to kids dropping out of school.

While having a mental illness before you go into school can be just as worst as school giving you a mental illness. I found an article that talks about how people with mental health or a learning disorder are more likely to drop out. The dropout rate for "normal" students is 7 percent. As students with an IDEA(Individuals with Disabilities Education Act) is 21.1 percent more likely to drop out. But, a student with an IDEA with emotional disturbances is about 38.7 percent. (Child Mind Institute) So this just shows that kids with a mental illness are more likely to drop out of school or don't do the best in school.

Zach, do you think school is the factor causing the mental health issues, or does school just make things worse for those kids with mental health issues? What are the percentages, I wonder, for adults with anxiety and depression? What can schools do to help students?
ReplyDeleteDo you think that there are different things that schools, or even individual teachers should learn how to help or make things easier? Or do you think that school and school work will always be a large stresser for high school students or students in general?
